Ashton School Choir was formed in November 2015. Ashton School is a second level Church of Ireland co-educational school in Cork in the Republic of Ireland. Music was introduced to the school as a curricular subject in September 2016. Students are trained using the Kodály method. The school has hosted three Cork International Choral Festival concerts, which featured local and visiting choirs. The school has competed in local and national competitions including the Cork International Choral Festival in April 2018. Choir members were guest performers at the Limerick Festival of Church Music in March 2017. Slovakia Cantat is a new experience for the choir, which is conducted by their music teacher Dr Mary G. O Brien.
Dr Mary G. O Brien is the Music teacher at Ashton School. She completed her B Mus Degree in Music Education at the CIT Cork School of Music in 1999. In 2000 she received a Graduate Diploma in Music Education at the University of Limerick, where she later completed a Masters in Music Education. In 2005 – 2006, Ms O Brien spent a year at the Kodály Institute, Kecskemet, Hungary, under the Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest. During that year she specialised in Choral Conducting with Dr Peter Erdei. On returning to Ireland she completed a Masters and a PhD in Music Composition at University College Cork.
