M Mus (Cincinnati); DMA (University of Southern California); • Conducted concerts in many famous concert halls throughout the world, including the Kennedy Centre (New York), Rachmaninov Hall (Moscow), The Royal Albert Hall (London), The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Concert Hall (Los Angeles), Teatro Colon (Buenos Aires), Grand Theatre (Shanghai), Musikverein Golden Hall (Vienna), and, of course the cultural icon of his home-town: the Sydney Opera House • Taught in High Schools, Colleges and Universities in Australia and the USA (including 9 years in California as head of orchestral music at Beverley Hills High School 90210!). • Various administrative positions in 20 years at The Sydney Conservatorium of Music, retiring from the position of Principal. • Toured as conductor with orchestras, brass ensembles and choirs in the USA, Canada, England, The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, New Zealand, Austria, Korea, The Philippines, Germany, Hong Kong, Chinese Taiwan and The People’s Republic of China. • Guest conductor, lecturer and adjudicator in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Estonia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Latvia, New Zealand, People’s Republic of China, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia, Slovakia, Chinese Taiwan, UK, and the USA. • Professor Smart is Honorary Professor of Music at Nagoya University of Arts (Japan); Chief Visiting Conductor of the Guangzhou (China) Symphony Orchestra; Board Member and Adjudicator for The Summa Cum Laude Vienna Youth Music Festival; Advisor to the International Federation for Choral Music; Artistic Advisor, Board Member and adjudicator for the Choir Olympics (re-named World Choir Games) ; Founding Chairman of the Board of Pan Pacific Music Camps. • Dr Smart was awarded the Australian Public Service Medal (P.S.M.) by Queen Elizabeth II in the 1990 Queens Birthday Honours for his service to music.
