Founded in the autumn of 1999 at Wuhan University, the Renwen Philharmonic Choir has grown into a vibrant choral organization comprising several ensembles, including the Renwen Philharmonic Chamber Choir (RPCC), the Renwen Philharmonic Youth Choir (RPYC), and the Renwen Philharmonic Teenagers’ Choir (RPTC). Since 2015, RPTC has actively participated in numerous prestigious choral festivals and competitions both in China and abroad. In July 2015, the choir earned Silver Prizes in both the Children’s Choir and Folk Song categories at the Bratislava International Youth Music Festival in Slovakia. At the 13th China International Chorus Festival in Beijing in July 2016, they received a Gold Prize (Grade A) in the Children’s Choir category and a Silver Prize (Grade B) in the Pop/Jazz category, also winning Best Accompaniment. In August 2016, they were awarded a Gold Prize and the Best Conductor Award at the Taipei Philharmonic International Choral Festival, where they were also invited to serve as the demonstration choir for masterclasses and workshops. The following year, at the 15th “Singing World” International Choral Competition in St. Petersburg, they won First Prizes in both the Children’s Choir and Folk Song categories, along with the Special Jury Award for Best Costume. In 2019, RPTC took part in the World Choir Games and the 4th European Choir Competition in Gothenburg, Sweden, where they earned Gold Medals in both the Children’s Choir and Accompanied Folklore categories. Beyond competitions, the choir regularly gives concerts and engages in community initiatives such as the “Choir in Rural Community” program, remaining dedicated to the spirit of choral music—cooperation, volunteerism, and harmony - and actively sharing these values with society.
Zhou Kai, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at the School of Music and Arts at Jianghan University and the Director of the Renwen Philharmonic Choir. A distinguished conductor, he won third place at the 2nd National Choir Conducting Competition and has served as chorus master for major works including Huang Anlun’s Phoenix Symphony, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and the English version of the opera High Mountains and Flowing Water. In 2012, he conducted a lecture-concert at the Taipei Bach Festival, and in 2016, he was invited to serve as the chief director of the music and painting poetry drama Zhongshan Love at Sun Yat-sen University, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Sun Yat-sen's birth. Yong Mao is a highly acclaimed conductor, educator, and global choral leader. Starting Spring 2025, he serves as Honorary Conductor for Renwen Philharmonic Choir (Wuhan, China). With a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Oklahoma, he boasts three Grand Prix and 15 gold medals in international choral competitions, recognized as one of the "World's Most Promising Young Choral Conductors" by IFCM. He has led ensembles like Dolce Canto (Montana, USA) and Peiyang Chorus (Tianjin, China), and actively promotes international choral exchanges.
