The Orfej Choir was founded in 2001 by a group of singers who had met at Prague's Hlahol and shared an interest in choral singing and related social activities. Throughout its existence, the choir has performed sacred and secular pieces from virtually all musical periods, ranging from the Renaissance to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Selected works have been recorded on two CDs released in 2011 and 2016. Since December 2021, the choir has been led by choir mistress Marie Matějková. Most of Orfej choir's repertoire is performed a cappella or with piano accompaniment, but the choir also welcomes collaborations with other instrumentalists and occasionally performs with larger ensembles. Orfej choir particularly enjoys singing in unique venues such as historical halls, castles, and outdoor settings. It brings the choir great joy when its performances resonate with listeners.
Marie Matějková graduated in singing from the Prague Conservatory under the guidance of Prof. Luděk Löbl. Since 2000, she has been a member of the soprano section of the Prague Philharmonic Choir. She has collaborated on various projects, including a television program about Antonín Dvořák, where she performed Moravian Duets and Biblical Songs. Additionally, she sings in the Prague Cathedral Choir, which she occasionally conducts. At the Prague Conservatory, she completed a course in the basics of conducting under Prof. Miriam Němcová.
