The choir was established under the name of “Stefan Kanev” by Senior Research Associate, Dr. Mihail Bukureshtliev in 2002 as part of the Community Centre „Slavianska Beseda 1880“. Prof. Dr. Bukureshtliev was the first researcher of children's folklore in Bulgaria and the founder of the first children’s folklore ensemble "Izvorche". Petya Bukureshtlieva has been the choir director for the past few years. The formation performs annually at local and international festivals and competitions. It has won applause and awards not only in Bulgaria, but all over the Balkans and a number of music scenes around Europe. Musical pieces by the composer Stefan Kanev, as well as classical folklore samples by Philip Kutev, Kiril Stefanov, Atanas Iliev, Anastas Naumov, and Atanas Kapitanov, are in the core of the formation’s repertoire. Since December 2022 the choir has been presented under the name of it’s creator and inspirator – Mihail Bukureshtliev.
Petya Bukureshtlieva – Stefanova has 34 years of teaching experience as a music teacher in a school in Sofia. She graduated from the Academy of Music, Dance and Visual Arts in Plovdiv. She also created the first school children's musical theater "Teddy Bear" in Sofia and wrote 10 original musicals for it. She is the author of over 40 children's songs, two albums of original songs and several folklore arrangements. She currently directs folklore ensemble for children and youths "Izvorche" - founded in 1961 by her father – Mihail Bukureshtliev. Nowadays she conducts the Folklore Formation “Mihail Bukureshtliev” which she won numerous local and international awards with - for preservation, confirmation and spread of the Bulgarian folklore.
