The East Tennessee State University Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Matthew Potterton, has toured throughout the United States and Internationally. Most recently, the ETSU Chorale competed in the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales and placed first in two categories and second in another. Members of the Chorale are chosen through a selective audition process and must be dedicated to the highest level of artistry. The group performs in a variety of styles and genres, ranging from music of the Renaissance to newly composed works. The choir also performed for the world famous men’s ensemble, Chanticleer. In a masterclass, members of Chanticleer noted the ETSU Chorale was an elite University ensemble, “We hear choirs from around the world and few sound as good as this choir!” The Chorale was also a featured performing-ensemble at the 2016 Tennessee Music Educator's Association's conference in Nashville
Dr. Matthew Potterton is Department of Music Chair and Co-Director of Choral Vocal Activities at East Tennessee State University. He has conducted choirs and taught voice at Baker University (Baldwin City, KS) the University of California, Irvine, Carroll College (Waukesha, WI), Alverno College (Milwaukee, WI), and Colorado University, Boulder. He has also taught elementary music, middle school choirs, and an award-winning high school choir. Having worked with all ages, he is a frequent clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in “The Literature and Performance of Choral Music” from Colorado University, Boulder, and also has a Master’s Degree (MFA) in both Vocal Performance and Choral Conducting from the University of California, Irvine. Under the direction of Dr. Potterton, the ETSU Chorale has toured nationally and internationally. In 2019, the ETSU Chorale competed in the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales and placed first in two categories and second in another. The internationally renowned judges had positive comments, including, “Beautiful tone, very expressive singing.” “Such an exciting, energized sound!” “Lovely choir and such excellent preparation!” “Excellent repertoire choices!” “This moved me immensely. Thank you.” “A very demanding program, sung in the required styles, with very good vocal qualities.” The Chorale was proud to represent ETSU and the United States on this prestigious world stage. In addition to conducting, Dr. Potterton has appeared as a tenor soloist in recital and on stage. Productions include Tobias in Sweeney Todd, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Nanki-poo in The Mikado, Barnaby in Hello Dolly, and Tamino in The Magic Flute. He has appeared as guest soloist for Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and Creation, Bach’s B Minor Mass and St Matthew Passion, Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus and Messiah, and Beethoven’s Mass in C Major and Symphony #9. Dr. Potterton has toured internationally with Men in Blaque, a men’s ensemble from Southern CA. This group has won gold medals in world choir competitions and is planning to compete again this summer in Wales. Dr. Potterton resides in Jonesborough, Tennessee with his beautiful wife, Amy, and two children, Madison, 16 and Brianna, 14.
