Hoërskool Jeugland prides itself in having 3 choirs; a boy’s choir and a girl’s choir and a mixed choir. Together they consist of 220 members which constitute about 20% of the school’s learners. Jeugland is the only mixed school in South-Africa with 3 choirs: boys- and girls choir, and a mixed choir. The choirs practice for 2 hours once a week. The choir memebers all participate in netball, hockey and rugby. These children does not have any other music training other than choir practice. The choir members are between the ages of 13 – 18 years. These children love to sing in the choirs and this is the place where they learn not only about music, but dicipline. The choirs sing to inspire and motivate other people by singing a wide range of music.a . In 2006 both choirs received a golden award at the Advent Competition in Prague. Because of this achievement, the girl’s choir received an invitation to participate in the World Olympic Games for choirs in Graz, Austria. In 2007 the boy’s choir won the Applause competition in the category for less-experienced choirs. They were also awarded the prize for the best choir overall. The girl’s choir proceeded to the finals in the category for more-experienced choirs and received a golden certificate. In 2008 and 2009 they were invited to sing at the opening ceremony of the Premier of Gauteng. They were also cast in the television series, “Villa Rosa”. In March 2008 they performed with Coenie de Villiers at a school function which also served to display the choir in their new outfits, especially designed for them by Wedding Date. They wore these outfits for their performance in Graz. In 2008 the girl’s choir performed at the Olympic Games in Graz and received a silver medal. The boy’s choir received a golden certificate at the ATKV-Applause competition finals in Cape Town. They were awarded as the best choir overall in the division for boy’s choirs. The girl’s choir is invited to perform as guest at an Ekurhuleni function to commemorate Oliver Tambo. In 2009 both the choirs perform with “Eden” and for the tenth time proceeds to the final of the ATKV-Appplause competition in Bloemfontein. At the abovementioned competition, they won their section and received a special award for the best presentation of a prescribed choir piece. The boy’s choir received a golden award. Both the choirs are invited to participate in a concert at the Voortrekker Monument, together with the East Rand Youth Choir. The school choir hosts a function and performs with the group “Flip-a-Coin” 2011 Both choirs participated in the Musica Mundi Internasional choir competition in Rome. The girls won the sacred category and the boys the Gospel category. In the same year the choirs participated in the Nasional ATKV-Applous choir competition and both choirs won their categories. The girls choir were awarded the best choir overall at the competition. 2012 both choirs participated in the Nasional competition and the boys won their category. 2013 the boys choir received gold at the National Choir competion in South-Africa
• Gert Pottas is a young passionate choir conductor. He grew up in the Eastrand and finished his school career at Hoërskool DR. EG. Jansen. He started conducting from the age of 19 and began his studies in music at the University of Pretoria South Africa. • Gert sang in various choirs throughout his teenage years. From 2004-2007 he was a member of the Colla Voce Youth choir under the direction of Henk Barnard. 2007-2009 he sang in the University of Pretoria Youth Choir under the direction of Lhente-Mari Pitout. In 2008 Gert was part of the Reinberger chamber choir under the direction of Richter Grimbeek. In 2009-2011 Gert was a member of the Singkronies Chamber Choir under the direction of Lhente-Mari Pitout. • In 2010 he was chosen to represent South Africa at the World Youth Choir summer session. The session was held in the republic of Spain and consisted of many concerts throughout the country and abroad. He was re-invited to attend the summer session 2011 of the World Youth Choir in Argentina. He was invited again to sing in the World Youth Choir Summer session 2012 in Cyprus. They performed various works of composers ranging from Beethoven to Eric Whitacre. • Gert completed a 4th year study at the University of Pretoria attaining a Bachelors Degree in Music (BMus). He underwent jazz vocal training with Barbora Tellinger and did classical piano training with Prof. Ruth Guveia. • Gert aims to complete his Bachelor’s Degree in performing arts with choral conducting as major. • He is also looking at pursuing a Masters Degree (MMus) in both Performance and Choir Conducting. He is a passionate musician that enjoys the beauty of making music. • At the age of 25 GertPottas is the conductor of 6 choirs in South-Africa. He conducts the following choirs: Hoërskool Jeugland Girl’s Choir Hoërskool jeugland Boy’s Choir Hoërskool Jeugland Mixed Choir East Rand Youth Choir Maranatha Christian School Mixed Choir Rheinberger Chamber Choir. • In 2013 Gert Pottas conducted the East Rand Youth Choir at the Musica Sacre a Rome International competition. The choir received a gold award and the adjudicators at the competition were very impressed with Gert’s conducting. One of the judges remarked that within a year Gert’s name will be all over the world as young conductor. • Gert loves being a conductor and has a special bond with all his choir members.
