University of Pretoria Youth Choir

The UP Youth Choir is a part of the multi-choir model of the University of Pretoria, South Africa. The choir consists of 82 singers aged 14 – 19 years from 33 different schools. The choir’s repertoire is an exciting assortment of South African and International music which incorporates elements of traditional music, jazz, spiritual and folk music. The UP Youth Choir is recognized worldwide for its award-winning performances and spectacular artistry. Their most recent performances include singing at the Mandela Centenary which featured former President Barack Obama. They added another gold medal to their prior achievements - Latvia 2014 they received 3 Gold medals, at the World Choir Games, this time in the category Mixed Youth Choir Champions Competition.

Lhente-Mari Pitout is a passionate musician and music educator in the rich traditions of the South African choral field. She works as a musician, conductor and adjudicator in both classical and contemporary genres. She regularly travels to Europe and North America to work as choral clinician or adjudicator at National and International Festivals. She has been awarded numerous prizes for her contributions to the arts as a singer and conductor. Apart from conducting UP Youth Choir from 2005, she is also the conductor of the highly prestigious and awarded Pretoria Boys High School Choir and the St Mary’s Singers.
