Schola Gregoriana Assisiensis is a vocal ensemble, made only by male voices, dedicated to the study and performance of monophonic liturgical and concert repertoires of European Christian Middle Ages (Gregorian chant, Ambrosian chant, ancient Roman chant), of polyphonic repertoires of the same period (Ars Antiqua in particular) extending also to the Renaissance polyphony, performed with male voices. Its members, almost all musicians, in the last years have matured, in parallel with their musical activities, a competence and a passion for sacred and liturgical vocal repertoires of the Middle Ages, devoting themselves to the deepening of performance practice even according to the most recent semiotic studies and sciences. Born in Assisi, Schola Gregoriana Assisiensis is based at the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, always entrusted to the care of the Friars Minor of the Seraphic Province of Umbria. With it we intend to revive the ancient tradition of the practice and the study of Gregorian Chant based in particular at the Basilica, thanks to the uninterrupted series of friars who have studied Gregorian chant at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome (including the founders Schola of the same). It gives concerts in Italy and abroad.
Founders of the Schola and directors are father Maurizio Verde OFM and father Matteo Ferraldeschi OFM. They both studied Gregorian Chant at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome with Masters Baroffio, Prassl, Turco, Albarosa and Saulnier. Currently, father Matteo Ferraldeschi, former choir master of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and singer of the Cappella Giulia, lives in the capital and performs as director of the Polyphonic Choir Laudesi Umbri di Spoleto. Father Maurizio Verde is chapel master at the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi and director of Corale Porziuncola. They are teachers at the Gregorian Chant courses which takes place every year at the Portiuncula, the Abbey of Farfa and Catania. They are also invited teachers at the italian section of the AISCGre courses (in Cremona and Venice).
