Wilfred Ma

Wilfred Ma was born in Hong Kong. He started his first double bass lesson with Lam Kiu Kok, former double bassist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 12. In 1994, he attended the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and received his Diploma of Music and Bachelor of Music (Hons) in 1995 and 1998. During his study, he was recipient of the Society of APA Scholarship, the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation Scholarship, the Standard Chartered Community Foundation Scholarship and the Exxon Energy Limited Scholarship. From 1995 to 1999, he became a member of the Asian Youth Orchestra for five summers and was appointed principal double bass in 1996 and 1997. Under the baton of legendary Romanian Maestro Sergiu Comissiona and collaborated with world’s best-known soloists including Yo Yo Ma, Anne Akiko Meyers, Andre-Michel Schub, Young Uck Kim, Leon Fleisher, Hakan Hardenberger, Mischa Maisky, Gil Shaham and Jon Nakamatsu, he had concert tours in the USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines. In 1999, he won the audition and appointed principal double bass of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. In the same year, he was awarded the Bernard Van Zuiden Music Fund Scholarship and the Conservatory Scholarship of SFCM to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with Stephen Tramontozzi, assistant principal double bass of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and earned his Master of Music in 2002. From 2002 to 2010, he was adjunct lecturer of the Department of Music and Fine Arts of the Hong Kong Baptist University. Besides educational career, he has also performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, the Macau Orchestra and the Macau Chinese Orchestra. From 2013 to 2014, he attended the Czech Conducting Workshop of the International Conducting Institute to study orchestral conducting with Professor Donald Schleicher, Maestro Kirk Trevor and Maestro Tomas Netopil. In the coming summer, besides returning to this workshop, he is going to attend the Conducting Workshop & Concerts in the USA.
