Founded in 1950s, Diocesan Boys´ School Chinese Orchestra is a full-sized Chinese Orchestra consisted of four sections: Wind, Plucked-String, Bowed-String and Percussion. Orchestral members are all students and graduates from Diocesan Boys´ School, with a current membership of around 60. Under the leadership of Principal Conductor Kwok Hang-kei, the orchestra has been promoting Chinese music as its mission. Since its founding, Diocesan Boys´ School Chinese Orchestra has been an active participant in the Hong Kong School Music Festival and captured numerouos championships in the ´Chinese Orchestra (Senior)´category. In addition to local performances, the orchestra has also gone on a number of highly successful tours. In 1996, as a representative of Hong Kong, the orchestra gave a distinguishing performance at ´The 75th Anniversary Gala Performance of the British Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech´ in London. In 2005 and 2007, the orchestra had participated in the 2nd and 4th ´Youth Chinese Orchestra Beijing Invitational Competition´ in Beijing, China respectively and was awarded ´Sunshine Prize´ (First Prize) in both years. More recently, the concert tour to Yunnan province, China with two concerts staged at Kunning and Lijiang in 2011 was highly acclaimed.
Kwok Hang-kei is a seasoned composer and conductor in Hong Kong, currently the Principal Conductor of Diocesan Boys´ School Chinese Orchestra. In recent years, he has guest conducted the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, the Taipei Chinese Orchestra, the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. He was also a part-time instructor at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and conducted several of the Academy concerts. In 2002, he conducted the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, China Chengdu National Music Orchestra and the Guangdong Chinese Orchestra in highly successful, critically acclaimed concerts. In 2003, the Qianwei Chinese Orchestra of Jinan in Shandong gave a televised concert featuring all his works. It was such a resoundong success thath the People´s Liberation Army Headquarters had it dispatched to all the frontier guards to share his music. His Chinese orchestral suite, Yunnan Ranges, was recorded by CCTV in 2007 and since then has been aired many times. It won critical acclaim and was considered a highly influential work. Kwok has dedicated a lot of effort in promoting and spreading Chinese ethnic and folk music over the years. He has been a visiting professor and consultant (Arts Education) to the People´s University of China since 2001, and Honorary Professor of Yunnan Arts University since 2003. He was elected as Vice President of the Hong Kong Chinese Instrumental Music Association in 2006. Kwok has been a Music Advisor to the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra over the years.
