The Bloemhof Jazz Ensemble was formed at the end of 2018 with the first rehearsal taking place in February of 2019. The ensemble, as it currently stands, consists of nine members: three alto saxophones, one tenor saxophone, a double bass, three vocalists and one member on keys. Many of the members are newcomers to genres other than classical as well as to playing in an ensemble. The group rehearses on a weekly basis for an hour and the participation in the International Youth Music Festival will only be the ensemble’s second public performance as a group. Genres that the group play include jazz, pop, ballads and traditional music. Participation in this festival as well as the music tour in general serves as a great catalyst for the future growth of this group.

Through this he also partook in the Zwide Music Outreach Programme run by TwoTone Music. He also regularly played for show bands in Port Elizabeth. During his final year of studies (2011), Leon started working at Pearson High School teaching bassoon, oboe, saxophone and piano. He also conducted the jazz band. In 2017 he was invited to conduct the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra as part of a masterclass programme hosted by the Peter the Great Music Academy and the National Univeristy of Colombia with Maestro Guerassim Voronkov.
