Florakören is the female voice choir of Åbo Akademi University in the city of Turku, Finland and was founded in 1944. The majority of the choir’s members are students at one of the universities in the city. The choir strives to provide its members with an opportunity to participate in ambitious, high-quality musical activities. In 2014 the choir celebrated its 70th anniversary with a grand concert at the Concert Hall in Turku. In recent years Florakören has visited counties such as Canada, Spain and Austria. The choir has also successfully taken part in various international competitions. In 2007 Florakören won first prize in the renowned "Fleischmann International Trophy Competition" in Ireland. Participation in the Spanish competition "Europe... and its songs" in 2003 rewarded the choir with a second prize in its category.
Ulf Långbacka (b. 1957) is lecturer of musicology at Åbo Akademi University as well as conductor of Florakören and male choir Brahe Djäknar since 1991. He has studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and has conducted choirs of all types, such as the chamber choirs Cantabile and Key ensemble or the children´s choir at Grankulla music school. He has won several prizes in choral competitions. He is also active as a composer, and has written instrumental music, chamber music, opera and al lot of choral music.
