The Menlopark High School Choir, founded in 1992, is one of South Africa’s leading mixed school choirs, comprising 115 learners aged 14–18. Directed by Jeanmari van Papendorp since 1997, the choir has established an outstanding reputation for artistic excellence in both performance and competition. Under her leadership, the choir has performed extensively across South Africa, including acclaimed appearances at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival and numerous Easter and Christmas concerts in collaboration with Salon Music, performing major choral works such as Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s St John Passion, and the requiems of Mozart and Brahms. Competitively, the choir has achieved exceptional success, including multiple awards as Best Mixed School Choir at the Pretoria and Centurion Eisteddfods, 23 ATKV Regional Festival Gold Diplomas, and numerous appearances at the National Finals of the ATKV Choir Competition. They have been awarded Best Mixed School Choir in South Africa at the ATKV National Finals 21 times between 1999 and 2025, including overall winner in 2012. Internationally, the choir has represented South Africa with distinction at prestigious competitions and festivals across Europe, including the World Choir Games, Summa Cum Laude Festival in Vienna, and the Brahms Competition. Highlights include winning the Youth Choir Category at Summa Cum Laude (2013), achieving top placements at World Choir Games in Graz, Sochi, and Tshwane, and being named Best Mixed Youth Choir at the Brahms Competition in 2023. The choir continues to build on its legacy of excellence and is scheduled to participate in the Bratislava Youth Music Competition and Festival in 2026.
