After receiving degrees in Church Music and Organ at the University of Music in Munich (Germany), Steffen Schreyer went to Stockholm (Sweden) for his post-gradual studies in Choral Conducting at the Royal College of Music. He was awarded a two-year scholarship for post-graduates by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and together with his diploma he was honoured by the very seldom given “belöningsjeton” – the medal of the Musical Academy of Sweden for outstanding merits, which was awarded to a conductor for the first time. During the six years he spent in Stockholm, he freelanced as choir conductor with the Swedish Radio Choir, the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir and others. Back in Germany he worked with the WDR Radio Choir Cologne, the NDR Radio Choir Hamburg, etc. and orchestras such as Stockholms Sinfonietta, Hamburger Barockorchester, Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz etc. Steffen Schreyer held a professor’s chair in Choral Conducting at the Catholic College of Church Music St. Gregorius in Aachen (Germany) from 2001 until 2007. During this time he was awarded the 2nd prize in the International Competition for Choral Conductors “Mariele Ventre” in Bologna. In 2006 Steffen Schreyer founded a professional choir “The European Vocal Soloists” composed of professional choir singers from Scandinavia, Great Britain as well as from Middle and East Europe. From 2009 until 2012 Steffen Schreyer was chief conductor for the Slovenian Chamber Choir in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Since March 2009 he has been working as the director of the choirs at the Cathedral of Konstanz, Germany. He is responsible for all musical performances in liturgy as well as concerts. Until the summer 2018 he has been holding the deputy professorship at the University of Music in Düsseldorf, Germany. In addition to his position in Konstanz he is teaching at the College of Music in Freiburg, Germany. Steffen Schreyer is very keen on producing high quality sound and interpretation with his choirs and has proved this in several competitions over the past years. The last great success he reached with his octet VoiceMix by winning the “special prize” and the Jugendkantorei, based at the Munster in Konstanz, were honoured with the 3rd prize and therefore are the best church children choir in Germany.
