Good Hope School Choir Founded in 1959, Good Hope School Choir is one of Hong Kong’s longest-established and best choirs. Music choral training at Good Hope School aims at helping her choristers to become confident young women, enhancing their autonomous leadership, strengthening their sense of commitment to the school and society and nurturing a proactive learning environment to inculcate in its members a positive attitude to life and a readiness to reach their full potential. The Choir has achieved outstanding results in various local and overseas music festivals. They won the championship in the Intermediate Girls - Foreign Language event and the Intermediate Mixed - Foreign Language and Chinese events in the 69th and 70th Hong Kong Schools Music Festivals, respectively. This year, the Choir came first in the Intermediate Girls - Foreign Language and Junior Girls - Chinese categories in the 71st Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Their marvelous performances are not confined to Hong Kong, as many of their overseas tours have gained international acclaim. The Choir was the Gold Awardee of the 5th and 6th World Choir Games (2008 & 2010). In addition, they were the Gold Awardee in the Folklore category and Category Winner in the Children Choirs category of the 5th International Copernicus Choir Festival & Competition in Poland (2017). The Choir was crowned the champion of the 9th World Peace Choral Festival in Vienna (2018). In 2019, the choir was awarded the First Prize in Children’s Category, Best Selected Competition Programme, and Grand Prix Varna at the 40th International May Choir Competition 2019 in Varna, Bulgaria. To broaden their experience, the young musicians have joined a rich array of cultural exchange tours to Beijing, Australia, Canada, Rome and Hungary. The Choir has also been invited to perform on a number of different formal occasions, such as the Open Day at Government House, the Zonta International 17th District 17 Conference, the “Opening of the Legal Year” Mass and Christmas caroling. Good Hope Choir will continue to bring exuberant joy to their audience through their sweet melodies.
Melody is a dedicated musician and educator. She showed remarkable musical talent from an early age. After winning numerous awards (vocal, piano and yang-qin classes) in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, she furthered her vocal studies at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). Whilst studying at the HKAPA, Melody sang the role of Guadalena in La Perichole and Dorabella in Cosi Fan Tutte. After graduation, she appeared as soloist in various concerts, operas and musicals, such as Mysterium Misericordiae Concert: Mahler Symphony No.2 (2016) and the HKMA Orchestra Productions: Mendelssohn Lobgedang No.10 (2009) as well as participating in production projects, such as Vocal Recital ~Voices for charity in Bangkok (2006) and Opera “Magic Flute” in Hong Kong and Beijing (2009). Melody started her conducting and vocal coaching career with the Hong Kong Children’s Choir in 2003. Since then, she has devoted herself to children’s artistic development. She organized musical productions and training for children in the capacity of Music Director at the Hong Kong Children’s Integrated Arts Center from 2005 to 2009. Melody returned to her alma mater Good Hope School in 2010 and became the Music Director (Vocal) in 2012. She is keen on laying a solid foundation in music for students by providing them with choral training throughout their kindergarten, primary and secondary school life in Good Hope. Through music of different genres and various cultural exchange programmes with international choirs, the young musicians can broaden their scopes. Under her leadership and coaching, the Good Hope School Choir has achieved excellent results in both local and overseas competitions. Owing to her outstanding performance as a choir conductor, Melody was awarded the Conductor’s Prize at the 5th International Copernicus Choir Festival and Competition 2017 in Toruń, Poland, and a special prize for young conductor with the brightest presence at the 40th International May Choir Competition 2019 in Varna, Bulgaria. Melody is committed to nurturing her choir members’ confidence, leadership skills and readiness to reach their full potential.
