The Wind Orchestra in Cieszyn has been around since 1987. The idea of creating an academic wind orchestra appeared thirty years ago and was put into life by two men: prof. Józef Świder, who was then the director of the Institute of Music Education, and mgr inż. Jan Kulig. Thanks to the favourable opinion of the University’s authorities and efficient organization, the orchestra started its first rehearsal in the winter semester of the academic year 1987/88. For many years, the orchestra’s conductor was Prof. Stanisław Śmietana and since the academic year 2012/13, the Wind Orchestra in Cieszyn at the University of Silesia has had a new conductor – Karol Pyka. The orchestra’s repertoire consists of great pieces of classical music, as well as new compositions written for this particular line-up. It also performs film music, popular songs and marches. The band has been awarded numerous times at international competitions (1st place in International Competition of Symphonic Bands Ostrava 2009, I Award with during 59. European Music Festival Neerpelt 2011, Silver Medal in 8th Internationale Musiktage Vöcklabruck 2012).
Karol Pyka – composer, conductor, session musician, teacher, assistant professor in the Institute of Music at the Faculty of Arts and Educational Science at the University of Silesia (since 2009). In 2015 he received his PHD in conducting at the Faculty of Conducting, Jazz Music and Music Education at the F. Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz.
