Founded in 2013, the Good Hope School Chinese Orchestra is one of the most complete Chinese orchestras within the Hong Kong school community. The Orchestra is composed of students aged from 12 to 17, and is led by renowned conductor Mr. Wong Chi-wah. The Orchestra has been actively participating in various music-related activities in Hong Kong. In just a few years’ time, the orchestra has built up its reputation among secondary schools in Hong Kong and received favourable comments at various music festivals. Recently, the Orchestra was awarded First Prize with Distinction at the European Music Festival for Young People in Belgium 2017 and a Distinction at the70th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Taking up the call to be music ambassadors, the orchestra also travels abroad on a regular basis and conducts music exchanges with musicians from all over the world.
Wong Chi-wah was born and educated in Hong Kong. He was part of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra as a professional erhu performer since the establishment of the Orchestra, working loyally for 35 years until his retirement. Wong is also a renowned Chinese Music conductor in both the secondary and tertiary education communities. Wong emphasises the importance of cultivating the younger generation to appreciate the music of their own culture. Besides conducting, he is also well known for the eff ort he has put into nurturing an appreciation of Chinese music among the young generation. He is enthusiastic in promoting Chinese music to young audiences and providing a platform to showcase the talents of young Chinese music performers. The Hong Kong-Singapore University Chinese Music Exchange Programme and the Jadeite Concerts organized by Wong have benefi tted thousands of teenage musicians throughout the years.
