On their free Saturday night some 40 young people between 17 and 25 years get together to sing. Cantilene received from the outset its own place within the C-choirs family. Six months after the establishment Cantilene achieved in 1978 under the leadership of Joseph Cleymans a First Prize Summa Cum Laude (97%) at the European Youth Music Festival in Neerpelt (Belgium). The jury wrote in the review: „a choir with unlimited possibilities.“ This was a perfect start to a choir with many possibilities, and this Cantilene has proven meantime. Three years after the establishment Cleymans Joseph gave the reins to Luc Anthonis as 19-year-old took the challenge and since then he is conductor of Cantilene. Cantilene achieved in its long history many fi ne results on choir competitions and festivals. Their participation in the competitions „Choir of the Year“ did not go unnoticed. The choir has visited almost all of Europe during his frequent concert tours (Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Netherlands, Spain, Wales, Poland, Denmark, Latvia, Andorra, Hungary, ...). The repertoire is very diverse and includes both sacred and profane music. The youth-choir has a wide selection of choral works, making it possible to take a walk through the entire history of music. The delineation in age the choir has continued renewal of members, which preserves the freshness of the votes.
Luc Anthonis started his musical career at the music academy of his hometown Ekeren where he studied the fl ute. He developed a particular fascination for choral music while singing in the youth choir Carmina under the direction of Jozef Cleymans. At the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory of Antwerp Luc Anthonis received qualifi cations for solfeggio, fl ute, chamber music, harmony and later in his career also for choral conducting. He rounded out his knowledge on choral music and choral conducting in master classes with Jan Eelkema, Michael Scheck, Juliaan Wilmots, Roger Leens, Eric Ericson, Simon Halsey, Péter Erdei and others. Since 1982 Luc Anthonis has taught fl ute and instrumental ensemble at the Ekeren en Berchem music academies. Over the years his “Strings Ensemble” has grown to become the “Symphonic Ensemble of Ekeren” (SEE). In 1980 Luc Anthonis took over the choir Cantilene from its founder Jozef Cleymans and in 1989 he himself founded the Vocal Ensemble Cantando. The latter has won a great number of prizes in national and international competitions. In July 2002 Luc Anthonis conducted the AGEC Eurochor in Bruges. He conducts the Flemish Radio Choir on a regular basis and has been choirmaster of an international choir in Italy for four years. Luc Anthonis is a standard member of the jury for provincial choir contest in Antwerp and also for the international youth choir competition in Neerpelt. In September 2007 Luc Anthonis became the new teacher of choral conducting at the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory in Antwerp.
