The Youth Orchestra of Florence was created in a collaboration between the city of Florence and the Accademia Musicale di Firenze (Music Academy of Florence) and comprises instrumentalists between 13 and 18 years of age. The orchestra has participated in numerous concerts and events in and around Florence and has toured extensively in Europe including England, Poland, Holland, France, Belgium, Finland, Germany where the orchestra participated in the opening of the Beethoven Festival in Bonn in 2008, Ireland, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Greece and Serbia. The orchestra was awarded first prize at the Music Festa Florence 2016. Janet Zadow has been its conductor since the orchestra was founded.
Janet Zadow was born in Stockport, Cheshire, England and is a Graduate of the London College of Music studying violin, piano and conducting. She has attended many courses on violin teaching methods including those given by Sheila Nelson, Geza Silvay (Colour Strings) Marla Muchler on the Rolland Method. After eight years in the Netherlands where she taught privately, at the British School of Amsterdam and at the Stichting Musiek School Amstelveen she transferred to Italy. She has organised teaching courses in collaboration with the Centro Didattica di Fiesole and the European String Teachers Association covering various aspects of string teaching. At the moment she teaches violin and viola in various institutions in Florence, Italy and conducts the ‘Orchestra Giovanile di Firenze’ and the chamber orchestra ‘Petit Ensemble’.
