Our mission is to foster a lifelong passion and appreciation of classical music for all children and youth in the West Coast community. Established during 2006 as a small, mixed orchestra in the West Coast, under leadership of Carina. Brown, it started to rehearse and taking part in local Esiteddfods and performances. By 2011, the West Coast Music Academy Orchestra were invited to perform at the Hugo Lambrechts Orchestra Festival in September 2011, for the first time. In 2015 Four WCYO players were chosen for the Wind- and String Orchestras of the South African National Youth Orchestra (SANYO). WCYO were ready to split into a Junior & Senior Symphony Orchestra, performing various works independently, as well as a mass orchestra together. This allowed the orchestra members of the various instrument groups to develop more specific, taking responsibility for their sections.
Carina Brown studied a Baccalaureus Musicae Degree at the University of Port Elizabeth, with Flute and Piccolo as majors. During her years at University she played flute and piccolo in several orchestras. She decided to start off as Carinas Musici (musici meaning musicians in Latin) at the local school, Hopefield High School with 20 children. During 2014 Carina was Nominated and short-listed for a Cultural Award for her contribution to the Performing Arts of Music, by the Western Cape Government of South Africa. In 2015 she was awarded The Ministerial Special Award for Outstanding Achievement for Women in the Arts and Culture at the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) Awards Ceremony. During March 2017 she was short-listed again for a Cultural Award for her contribution to the Performing Arts of Music by the Western Cape Government Cultural Affairs Awards Ceremony 2016/2017.
