The choir originates in Slovenia, more specifically in Koroška region, which lies on the border between Slovenia and Austria. Both the plant and the choir Vres are inseparable from the ground of Koroška. The choir is a way of life for the singers, their families and friends. It is a cultural embodiment of the pride and uprightness of Koroška: a proof and confirmation of our origins from Slovenia and Koroška. “Harmonious male singing is the highest goal, it is the purpose and the energy deriving and growing from socializing, firm bonds and friendship.” (Košuta J., Fras Z.) The choir has been active for forty two years. Jožko Kert and Almira Rogina have led the choir for twenty years each. In the forty first year of Vres Helena Buhvald Gorenšek has taken over the leadership. The choir had already been enthusing audiences on municipal and inter-municipal shows as well as many concerts of our own. We have taken part in regional and national competitions “Naša pesem” in Maribor, where we have confirmed our quality and received seven silver and two bronze awards, as well as awards for the best choice of program, the best performance of a Slovenian folk song, the best male choir and other. The choir is often on tour abroad. Our singing ways have led us across numerous countries in Europe, as well as other continents (Africa, Azia and America). The quality of the choir has been recognised by the most esteemed composers of Slovenia, which have written a plenty of songs for Vres, most importantly Mr Lojze Lebič.
Helena Buhvald Gorenšek has begun her music career when she was nine years old and she entered the music school in Ravne na Koroškem, where she was taught piano. She has completed eight years of primary music school and four years of secondary music and ballet school in Ljubljana as a pupil of Alenka Dekleva. She has enrolled in the Academy for Music in Ljubljana, where she studied Music Pedagogy and the Faculty of Education, where she studied Social Pedagogy and received a bachelor’s degree in 2006. She was also a member of various choirs from the age of seven. Her first experience with the role of a choir leader came in secondary school. She was the leader of a children’s church choir and later the Mixed Church Choir of Ravne na Kororškem. In 2005 she took over the student’s mixed choir (today known as Academic Choir of Koroška) Mohorjan with which she performed her diploma concert superbly under the supervision of Marko Vatovec and received an award for exceptional artistic achievement from the University in 2008. In September 2011, she took over the leadership of the Male Choir Vres, which has forty years of tradition in Slovenia. She has achieved success with both choirs on the regional and the international level. Among others, she received the award for a perspective young conductor in the “Naša pesem 2012” competition in Maribor.
