G.S.M.G. Bragi is the biggest and oldest student music association in Groningen, The Netherlands. It was established in 1882 and celebrates its 135th birthday this year. Bragi consists of a symphonic orchestra, a grand choir and an a cappella choir. The a cappella choir is the youngest ensemble of Bragi and exists since 1968. The 20 singers of the choir perform several times a year. They sing a varied programme and participate in competitions, for example the Pytische Spelen, where they won the first price. Rein de Vries is conductor of the a cappella choir since 1980.
Rein de Vries studied orchestral and choral conducting at Groningen Conservatory with Zsolt Deáky and Cees Rotteveel. His vocal coach was Inge Keemink. He followed several courses for interpretation of early music in Germany and Denmark. Rein was a conductor with various choirs and ensembles in and around the city of Groningen, amongst which was the renowned Groningse Bachvereniging. From 1998 till 2008 he conducted the Bragi Grootkoor, but his liaison with the A Cappella Choir stems from as far back as 1980. In 2005 at his 25th anniversary as a Bragi conductor Rein was decorated with the Royal Order of Oranje-Nassau.As a vocal soloist Rein performed a.o. in Handel’s Messiah and Israel in Egypt, in Bach’s St. John Passion and in David & Jonathas by Charpentier. He sang in the Ensemble Josquin Desprez and in Bremenbased ensemble Weser-Renaissance. Furthermore, Rein is an enthusiastic violist and since 2009 he has played with the Bragi Orchestra. Together with the A Cappella Choir Rein has performed a wide range of choral works from all periods and by composers like Josquin, Schütz, Bach, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Britten, Poulenc, Kodály, Pärt and Whiteacre
