Youth choir of II. gimnazija Maribor

The mixed youth choir of the II. gimnazija Maribor has a long-standing tradition of more than 50 years. Having been founded in 1960, the founder and the original choirmaster for the first ten years was Joža Ambrož. She was succeeded by Tone Žuraj, Valerija Nemec and Viljem Babič, who has been the choirmaster since 2005. Over the years, the number of members of the choir varied, yet the choir never failed to inspire its audiences with traditional Slovenian folk and foreign songs. Currently, the choir consists of 47 singers who are attending different secondary schools in the city of Maribor. Amongst the choir’s better known achievements are its cooperation with St. Stanislaus’ Institute, I. Gymnasium Maribor, Gymnasium Slovenj Gradec, best-rated performance at a Maribor regional youth choir competition, a golden medal and the winner of the category of mixed youth choir at Young Prague 2015 and its solo concerts, such as Gloria, Pozdrav pomladi, Viva la musica, Celebramus, Brez besed, Nad mestom se dani, and others.
Viljem Babič
Conductor / Leader
Viljem Babič became enthused about choir singing during his primary school years. After successfully finishing the III. Gymnasium Maribor and the Conservatorium for Music and Ballet, he began singing in the Academic Choir of Maribor, where he soon became the rehearsal coach and the conductor’s assistant. During this time he also joined a vocal group named Canticum and under the leadership of Jožef Fürst he began gaining experience in choir competitions, both at home as well as abroad. After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Musical Pedagogy at the Faculty of Education in Maribor, he began working at the I. Gymnasium and II. Gymnasium, where he successfully led the mixed youth choir of the I. Gymnasium Maribor, a vocal group on the second gymnasium and the youth choir Carus. As a conductor he led the Mixed Choir KUD Bezena, the male choir Obrtnik Maribor and a female quarter of the II. Gymnasium Maribor. In the years 2010 and 2011 he conducted the choir of the Conservatorium for Music and Ballet Maribor. Between 2013 and 2014 he led the chamber choir Carus. He is currently employed as a music teacher on the II. Gymnasium Maribor, where he is also working as the conductor for the Youth mixed schools choir.
