The VOCES vocal ensemble was founded in 2008 in Košice, Slovakia. Its members are experienced singers from various amateur choirs, having an urge to sing a more sophisticated repertoire, highly emphasizing vocal performance and harmony. They prefer to choose demanding pieces of early music, but at their concerts they regularly perform the latest contemporary pieces as well. In 2011 the group recorded its first album and learned an extraordinary, 6-voice funeral office by Victoria, the master of the Spanish renaissance. Every year, they organise an Advent concert, presenting their new repertoire and inviting guest choirs. In summer, the ensemble gathers for its traditional 3-day vocal training with conductor Hernán Alcalá from Paris, focusing on chiselling the singers’ technique, often with individual rehearsals. Their performance proves that even amateurs, forming a close group of friends, can produce unique harmonies, if led by a professional.
Hernán Alcalá studied singing and conducting in Venezuela. Coming to France, he got his degree in musical sciences, choir conduction and lyrical singing. He obtained further qualification and gained more skills at trainings led by Dénes Szabó. Today, he conducts several choirs (latin-american choir Popayán, The Cachan Univeristy Choir and Ensemble Mångata), and is also leading work-shops in Slovakia. As a singer he co-operates with many professional choirs such as: Soli-Tutti, Le Palais Royal, Les Cris de Paris.
