SoLeMiJo is a small mixed choir from Tartu, Estonia, uniting a fellowship of people who love singing. The choir has been active since year 2001. The size of the choir varies slightly in time, but is roughly between 20 and 30 singers. Our repertoire is wide and covers classic choir, church, pop and folk music, the latter being the closest to our hearts. We have participated at several National Song Celebrations in Estonia, festivals and choir contests. We have taken part in Estonian Chamber Choir Competitions three times. In August 2010 we took part in the International Choir Competition “Singing World” in St. Petersburg, Russia, achieved the II place in folk music and IV place in mixed choir category. In May 2012 we took part in the IX Pärnu International Choir Festival in Estonia, where we were given Silver Diploma. In August 2013 we took part in the Ohrid Choir Festival in Macedonia, earning a diploma of first prize. The year 2014 was dedicated to the National Song Celebration in Tallinn (taking place in every 5 years in July with more than 30 000 singers performing for and audience of 80 000), at which we participated as a selected choir.
Our choir is directed by two conductors. Nele Valdru has graduated Tallinn Pedagogical University (teacher Merike Aarma) on conducting. Apart of being our beloved conductor for many years, she teaches music in school for living and is a proud mother of three children. Ruth Kuhi joined our choir as a singer in 2012 and has been our second conductor since autumn 2014. She has graduated the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre with Master’s degree (teacher Kristi Mühling) and is currently working as musical instrument teacher in music schools. Ruth is also acting as a conductor for Sotto Voce, the national Estonian zithers orchestra.
