University of Johannesburg Choir is quite unique – their programme represents the exciting colours and sounds of the City of Gold: fine Western repertoire combined with full blooded African music. The choir was formed at the beginning of 2005 when UJ was born out of a merger of several institutions. The majority of singers are choir fanatics but since UJ doesn’t offer music, none of the singers are music students. The majority study economics and only few had formal music training or read music. Since their birth as UJ Choir in 2005, they have released 7 CD’s.
Renette Bouwer
Conductor / Leader
Renette Bouwer is responsible for the general management of the choir, selection of the singers, vocal and aural training and the teaching of Western Music repertoire. She is a repected international jurist and has been with the choir for 16 years, for the last 10 years being joined by Sidumo Jacobs who adds the exciting African flavour. He is internationally active as specialist in African Music and travels widely.
